Our history

As early as 1903 the company was involved in a number of activities, such as fishing processing, shipping, and barrel making.

In 1927 Steinshamn Formjølfabrikk (a fish meal factory) was founded, during a period when herring oil was a new industry along the coast.  In the 1930s a patent was obtained to start producing Husegrabben, an unloading crane for herring.  This contributed to a revolution in the herring oil industry.

In 1941 Einar Røsok from Harøy founded Hydraulik Brattvåg, which later became Ulstein Brattvåg, Rolls-Royce Marine and now Kongsberg Maritime.  The company was founded in close cooperation with Ingebrigt P Huse and his son Paul.  This was the beginning of a long and prosperous cooperation between the two companies.

In 1970 I P Huse delivered the first anchor handling winch.  The winch was installed aboard West Avocet.

In 1982 the herring oil factory was closed and demolished.  The herring tanks were also demolished, and all focus shifted to winch production.

In 1993 we produced the first anchor handling winch with a socket compartment, specially made for work in Brazil.  The winch was installed aboard Mærsk Provider, which was built at the Søviknes shipyard.

In 1995 we delivered our biggest project to date, to an FPSO (Floating Production, Storage and Off-loading) vessel called Petrojarl Foinaven.  The vessel was overhauled at the Astano shipyard in Spain. The vessel used to produce oil for BP west of the Shetland Islands.

In 2002 I P Huse was named "Company of The Year 2001" for the region of Møre & Romsdal.

In 2006 we delivered the first set of winches for the sixth-generation drilling rigs.  For these types of rigs, we have made winches for both chain and wire.

In 2009 we delivered the world's strongest anchor handling winch to the world's strongest anchor handling vessel.  The vessel has a bollard pull of more than 340 tons.

In the period from 2016 to 2018 we delivered large electrical anchor handling winches for Mærsk vessels built at Kleven shipyard.

In 2019 the vessel Island Victory set the world record for an specialized anchor handler with a bollard pull of 477 tons. The special anchor handling winch package was delivered by I P Huse AS.
